scent club at PHI, Montreal

Sep 27, 2025

Our Scent Club hosts the scent-curious to play, share, and learn at our monthly gatherings. Through immersive exploration and meaningful dialogue, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for olfaction as we nurture community, presence, and connection to the fragrant world around us.

In the spirit of exploring contemporary artistic practices that go beyond the visible, PHI has invited chimie to imagine and facilitate a series of scent workshops in dialogue with their fall-winter 2025-2026 exhibitions: Josefa Ntjam, Manuel Mathieu, and Keiken.

Workshops:

September 27: Ocean and Outer Space

Inspired by swell of spæc(i)es by Josèfa Ntjam, we’ll dive into the sea and sky: two vast unknowable spaces that have long captured our imagination.

October 25: Scent as Collective Memory

Inspired by Unity in Darkness by Manuel Mathieu, we’ll explore how scent can carry both personal and collective memory—those traces of the past that shape who we are.

November 22: Imaginary Futures

Inspired by Sensory Oversoul by Keiken, we’ll follow our noses into speculative worlds. What does utopia smell like? What new visions might scent unlock?

January 17: Scent as Texture

Inspired by the tactile and multisensory elements of this season’s exhibitions at PHI, this scent club will play with scent as a form of texture—something we can’t touch, yet often feel in vivid and complex ways.

February 21: Scent as Medium

Inspired by the themes woven throughout this season’s exhibitions at PHI, we'll close the series by embracing scent as a medium in its own right: a channel for creativity, emotion, and transformation.

As part of each workshop, you’re invited to bring one or two scented objects to share with the group, whether perfumes, oils, incense, spices, teas, or anything else with a scent or story.
